More on Deterministic and Nondeterministic Finite Cover Automata - Extended Abstract

چکیده
Finite languages are an important sub-regular language family, which were intensively studied during the last two decades in particular from a descriptional complexity perspective. An important contribution to the theory of finite languages are the deterministic and the recently introduced nondeterministic finite cover automata (DFCAs and NFCAs, respectively) as an alternative representation of finite languages by ordinary finite automata. We compare these two types of cover automata from a descriptional complexity point of view, showing that these devices have a lot in common with ordinary finite automata. In particular, we study how to adapt lower bound techniques for nondeterministic finite automata to NFCAs such as, e.g., the biclique edge cover technique, solving an open problem from the literature. Moreover, the tradeoff of conversions between DFCAs and NFCAs as well as between finite cover automata and ordinary finite automata are investigated. Finally, we present some results on the average size of finite cover automata.

Simplifying Nondeterministic Finite Cover Automata
The concept of Deterministic Finite Cover Automata (DFCA) was introduced at WIA ’98, as a more compact representation than Deterministic Finite Automata (DFA) for finite languages. In some cases representing a finite language, Nondeterministic Finite Automata (NFA) may significantly reduce the number of states used. The combined power of the succinctness of the representation of finite language...

متن کاملInapproximability of Nondeterministic State and Transition Complexity Assuming P=!NP
Inapproximability results concerning minimization of nondeterministic finite automata relative to given deterministic finite automata were obtained only recently, modulo cryptographic assumptions [4]. Here we give upper and lower bounds on the approximability of this problem utilizing only the common assumption P 6= NP, in the setup where the input is a finite language specified by a truth tabl...
متن کاملInformation Rate of Some Classes of Non-regular Languages: An Automata-Theoretic Approach - (Extended Abstract)
We show that the information rate of the language accepted by a reversalbounded deterministic counter machine is computable. For the nondeterministic case, we provide computable upper bounds. For the class of languages accepted by multi-tape deterministic finite automata, the information rate is computable as well.
متن کاملResults on the Average State and Transition Complexity of Finite Automata Accepting Finite Languages (Extended Abstract)
The study of descriptional complexity issues for finite automata dates back to the mid 1950’s. One of the earliest results is that deterministic and nondeterministic finite automata are computationally equivalent, and that nondeterministic finite automata can offer exponential state savings compared to deterministic ones, see [11]—by the powerset construction one increases the number of states ...
